Fish are opportunistic feeders the quickest, easiest, and biggest meal is the one they are generally going to be attracted to first. With this in mind it is no wonder why fish love cripples. Cripples tend to be dead bugs that died in the process of emergering, never quite forming into an adult, however, not a nymph. These easy protein packed meals are a trout’s delight and they readily target them. Green Drakes are one of the biggest mayflies in the Western USA, making them the biggest hatches on a lot of rivers. Fish will be looking for these cripples in the hatch, making this pattern a great addition to any fly box.
